Are you concerned about your child’s speech production?  Is he or she difficult to understand?  Today I want to tell you about a technique called  PROMPT.

One of our goals as speech-language pathologists is to help children improve their speech intelligibility and their ability to effectively communicate.  In addition to traditional methods, at Enrichment Therapy and Learning Center, speech-language pathologists are PROMPT trained. We use PROMPT along with a variety of other therapeutic techniques to meet children’s communication goals.

PROMPT is an acronym for:  Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets.  This technique uses touch to cue the child’s jaw, tongue and lips to manually guide them through a targeted sound, word, phrase, or sentence. PROMPT develops motor control and efficient oral muscular movements.

PROMPT therapy is an appropriate tool to use with children with a wide range of communication disorders.  Specifically, kids who have motor speech disorders such as apraxia of speech, articulation problems, and also kids who are non-verbal.

Click here to view a Therapy Talk. You will be able to see examples of what PROMPT might look like with your child.

Again, our speech-language pathologists are PROMPT trained. We have each attended an intensive workshop through The PROMPT Institute. These techniques should not be attempted without proper training.  Please contact us for a consultation or to schedule an evaluation for your child.  We want to help every child communicate clearly – – every child deserves to have their own voice!

Enrichment Therapy & Learning Center has locations in the Iowa City, IA area and Des Moines, IA area. We provide individual speech-language therapy and tutoring as well as offering small group academic programs.  At Enrichment Therapy & Learning Center our passion is to help kids achieve effective communication skills and gain academic success.  Contact us for more information on how we can help your child succeed.
