Sight words are commonly used words that young children are encouraged to memorize so that they can automatically recognize these words in print without having to use any strategies to decode. Knowledge of sight words helps increase reading rate and accuracy! Here at Enrichment Therapy & Learning Center, P.C., we use Fry’s Sight Words to help our students achieve confidence with reading. The Fry Sight Words list includes 1,000 of the most common words to appear in reading materials used in Grades 3-9. Learning all 1,000 words in the Fry list would equip a child to read about 90% of the words in a typical book, newspaper, or website. Benefits of learning sight words:

  • Many sight words do not follow the basic phonics principles, thus they cannot be “sounded out.”
  • The first 100 sight words represent over 50% of English text, a child who has mastered the list of sight words can already recognize at least half of a sentence.
