A couple of weeks ago, we described adapted books and provided an example of an adapted book with tactile additions. If you missed that blog post, check it out here! For those of you who found the previous example of an adapted book helpful, below are some additional examples of adaptations we’ve made to books here at ETLC. As you create your own adapted books at home, consider the following tips! 1. Consider how you can describe the items you’ve added. For example, can you discuss colors, textures, sizes, and shapes of these items with your child? 2. When including tactile additions, try to include varied textures, colors, sizes, and shapes, when possible. These items can provide a great opportunity to compare and contrast different concepts! 3. Take your time! Allow your child ample opportunity to learn about each new vocabulary word through your additions of physical items or pictures.
“Three Little Kittens” by Melissa Everett
For this book, some items we’ve included are a dropper with water for tears, a patch of ‘fur’ for kitten fur, some apple-scented melting wax to represent apple pie, some ‘mittens’ (children’s socks) with tape for sticky mittens, and a clothesline to show how the kittens hang their mittens to dry. There are many opportunities to discuss different vocabulary words as you read this book and touch and feel the items included. For example, wet vs. dry mittens, soft fur, sticky mittens, as well as the colors of the mittens, apple pie, and clothesline, just to name a few!
“There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Shell!” by Lucille Colandro
Adaptations we’ve made to this book include the addition of shells, tongs to represent crabs, a fish in water, some feathers representing the seagull, two small pails, and some sand. A great way to describe each item to your child is to talk about colors (of pails, sand, shells, crabs, and feathers). You might also discuss textures (rough/bumpy shells, smooth sand, soft feathers) or movements (crabs pinching, fishtail moving back and forth, pails swinging back and forth).
