Does your child struggle to eat certain foods?
Are meal times stressful for you and your child?
It can be confusing and frustrating for parents when their child will refuse to eat anything except their 3-5 favorite foods. However, it’s important to maintain a positive attitude so that children begin to associate meal times as pleasant experiences.
- When you offer new foods to your child, refrain from begging or bribing them to try them. Allow them to simply be exposed to the new food.
- Don’t give up. Some children need to be exposed to a new food many times before they will accept it.
- Encourage your child to be involved with meal time preparation. Let them choose a fruit or vegetable at the grocery store. Have them help you with simple tasks in the kitchen (e.g., rinsing veggies or tearing lettuce for salad).
- Make sure that you, as the parent, are eating a variety of foods as well. Children often learn by example, so if you wrinkle your nose at broccoli, so will they.
