Student writing in notebook

It’s that time of year again!  ’Tis the season for family get-togethers and that might mean long road trips.  Traveling is not always the easiest endeavor with kids in the backseat.  While kids are often eager to grab their electronic games, music and headphones, or watch a movie to pass the time, here are some fun educational games and activities that kids and adults can play:

Younger-Aged Kids:

  • Rhyming – give your child a word and have them give you one or more words that rhyme with your word.
  • Alphabet game – find the letters in your child’s name on signs or license plates.
  • I Spy – a classic game that young children love!  Have everyone in the car take turns guessing.
  • Creative Time – have kids use pipe cleaners or Wikki Stix to make letters, numbers, or shapes.

Intermediate-Aged Kids:

  • A to Z game – a twist on the alphabet game from above, except this time kids will find all letters in alphabetical order.
  • I am Going on a Picnic game – an alphabet game that tests your memory!  The first player will say “I am going on a picnic and I’m bringing ____,” naming a food that starts with the letter A.  The second player will repeat the phrase, state the first player’s ‘A’ food, as well as a food they name beginning with the letter B.  The game continues until someone can’t remember one of the foods spoken.
  • Mileage countdown – pick a milestone mileage (for instance every 50 miles, etc.) and everyone in the car does a cheer when you’ve reached the milestone.  Then, give a countdown of the miles left until you’ve reached your destination.
  • Listen to an audiobook – talk about what is happening in the story and make predictions.

Older-Aged Kids:

  • Mad Libs – making a crazy and funny story is always a hit!
  • License plates with states – have kids be on the lookout for license plates from as many different states as possible.  They can either say it out loud or write it down when they have seen a new state.
  • Spelling bee – use your child’s school spelling words or any words of your choosing.
  • Travel journal – encourage your child to write about their adventures in traveling – stops you make, vehicles they see, road construction projects taking place, etc.

Enjoy the time with family this holiday season – even the extended times in the car traveling!  Safe travels!
