Is it difficult practicing sight words with your child? Is it even more difficult practicing sight words with your child during the holiday season? The holidays are a busy time and finding time to practice sight words can be challenging. Here are five simple and fun ways to incorporate holiday-themed crafts, games, and movement with retention of sight words.
1. Under the Tree: This simple way to practice sight words requires: index cards, a pen, and a lit Christmas tree. First, write your child’s sight words on index cards. Next, spread them out below the Christmas tree. Finally, turn off the lights in the house and turn on the Christmas tree lights. Then, let your child lay below the Christmas tree and use the lights from the Christmas tree to read the sight words. If it is not bright enough, you could use a flashlight to assist in making it light enough to read. Your children will love the idea of using the Christmas tree to read their sight words! 2. Make a Snowflake: The materials you will need for this simple craft are: white paper, scissors, and a pen. This craft is great for early readers and incorporates fine-motor movement to create a beautiful snowflake your child will surely be proud of. First, make a few snowflakes using scissors and white paper. Next, write one of your child’s sight words on each corner of the snowflake. Last, hang your child’s snowflakes up around the house- this will serve as holiday decorations as well as a reminder to you and your child to spend time reading the sight words off of the snowflake. * You could also make other holiday decorations such as candy canes, wreaths, and snowmen to write sight words on! 3. Santa Hat/ Stocking Draw: The materials you will need for this simple game are: a Santa hat or stocking, index cards, and a pen. This is an easy game to engage your child in reading their sight words. First, write your child’s sight words on index cards. Next, put them into the Santa hat. Have your child draw an index card out of the Santa hat or stocking and read the word, you can then repeat it a few times. Try taking turns drawing the sight words out of the Santa hat! 4. Marshmallow Madness: The materials you will need are: paper and mini marshmallows or chocolate chips. You may be doing a lot of cooking this holiday season, so why not incorporate sight words into something you are already doing. First, set out the paper and decide which sight word you will be spelling. Next, depending on the age of your child either you or your child will take the mini marshmallows and spell out the word. Then, have the child read the sight word and practice it five times before spelling out another one. All kids will love spelling their sight words in food! 5. Shaving Cream Snow Storm: The materials you will need are: shaving cream and a clean table or desk. First, refer to the shaving cream as “snow” and tell your children they are going to practice writing/ reading their sight words in the snow! Next, put a few squeezes of shaving cream onto the desk. Then, let the children smear around the shaving cream so that the desk is covered. Finally, clean off your child’s hands with paper towels and have them write out some of their sight words into the snow. You can assist your child by writing them also. Have your child read the words, or repeat them a few times!
