Does your child struggle with understanding what is being said to him or what he is reading?

At Enrichment Therapy & Learning Center, PC, you will see a giant movie reel and pictures related to a movie theme. Then you will notice the words printed on the wall, “Visualize Success.” This motto has a couple of meanings for us. First, we do believe that goals are attained by visualizing a goal and then setting steps to achieve it; however, that motto has a second meaning for us. If a child cannot create an image (visual representation) of what is being said or read to him, he will not be able to retain the information. Visualizing is not only important to a child’s academic success but also to his social success. If the child cannot visualize what is being said to him, he may have difficulties carrying on a conversation with others. Without visualization skills maintaining a topic, understanding vocabulary, or identifying inferences (something assumed but not directly stated) within a conversation may become overwhelming and lead to avoidance of social interactions or inappropriate reactions. Not only is the process of drawing images in our heads vital for achieving goals and academic and social success, but it also helps children love to learn. They become a greater part of what they are reading because they have a more vivid mental picture of it. The days when parents recognize the change in their child’s attitude towards learning are the best days for us. Seeing that child’s homework routine goes from frustrating and anxiety-ridden to pleasurable and fun, is our motivation. That is why we love what we do!
