Have you heard of reader’s theater? Reader’s theater is a type of acting in which performers do not memorize their lines. Sets, costumes, and actions are minimal, and the focus is on each performer’s words and expression. This month in our Triumph Over Reading program the students are working on a reader’s theater to perform for their families on the last day. There are many benefits of reader’s theater, including:

  • improved reading fluency through repetitive readings of the text
  • increased expression while reading aloud
  • accurate comprehension of the storyline
  • improved confidence in students’ reading

Many times a reader’s theater script is adapted from a book. In the Triumph Over Reading program, we are working on a reader’s theater called, “How I Became a Pirate,” adapted from the book by Melissa Long. You can find the script from Mandy’s Tips 4 Teachers blog post. For some tips on helping your child read aloud, check out Megan H’s blog post!
