Fun & Educational Pre-Literacy Applications: Megan’s Favorites

By Megan Hughes, M.A., CCC-SLP Speech-Language Pathologist

Needing some motivating activities to teach your preschooler/kindergartner their pre-literacy skills? Check out my favorite iPad applications! These fun apps provide stimulating activities that break down the very first stages of the reading process.

1) Phonics Munch Letterstone Park This $0.99 app by Brainster Academy, Inc. is well worth every penny. Phonics Munch Letterstone Park is a pre-reading program that provides games, digital and printable flashcards, music videos, and worksheets to reinforce target concepts.  Bonus: This app is aligned with the Common Core standards.

2) Dora ABC’s Vol 2: Rhyming Words This $1.99 app by Nickelodeon allows children to match rhyming words and become aware of individual sounds in words and how these sounds are sequenced and changed to make new words. Have your child help Dora and Boots go over the troll bridge by paying the grumpy old troll tokens to cross. The tokens are earned by completing an activity within the app.

3) Phonics Ninja This FREE app by Innovative Investments Limited helps improve a child’s speed and accuracy of letter recognition. The app tells parents exactly which letters the child got correct and which were missed so you know which letters need extra review. PLUS your child gets to act like a ninja and slice through lowercase letters, uppercase letters, blends, digraphs, and more!
