Families of children with special needs often feel alone, overwhelmed, exhausted, discouraged… the list goes on.  Thankfully, families in Iowa have an abundance of resources available to them to provide support, education, and assistance in other ways.  Here are just a few of the wonderful organizations around the state that are dedicated to serving these families:

The Autism Society of Iowa is an organization that provides education and resources to families affected by autism.  On the website, you will find information regarding grants, scholarships, summer programs, upcoming events, and a list of parent support groups around the entire state.

The Hawkeye Area Down Syndrome Association serves families in Eastern Iowa by providing education, support, and advocacy.  They host annual events and meetings for families, educators, and other members.

Gigi’s Playhouse is an organization that has programs all over the nation, including Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Sioux City, and the Quad Cities.  These programs provide support, education, advocacy, and therapeutic and educational opportunities for families of individuals with Down syndrome.

Family to Family Iowa has compiled this excellent list of resources from around the state that provide assistance for various needs that families may have, including ADHD, epilepsy, vision impairments, and many others.

Hopefully, this list is helpful to Iowa families who may be in need of guidance or advice, further information regarding a diagnosis, or just another parent or caregiver to talk to.
