Middle school, high school, and college can be a difficult adjustment for any student! While the added layer of a dyslexia diagnosis has its strengths, it also poses some challenges, such as note-taking. Here are some helpful assistive technological resources to consider for your child.

Assistive Technologies for Note-Taking

Livescribe Smartpen

This pen captures what is written and spoken using a camera that snaps pictures of your child’s notes as they are written and a microphone that records what is being said in a lecture. Please note this device requires Livescribe dot paper. This is an excellent tool if your child has difficulty with auditory processing, fast note-taking, and spelling. Notes can be easily uploaded to a computer and edited while re-listening to the lecture audio.

OneNote

This popular note-taking application is free and available on most devices. It offers templates for lecture note-taking and studying. This app also has text-to-speech and speech-to-text features.

Evernote

This tool is also available on almost any device. It allows your child to customize a note-taking template that best suits their needs.

Notability

This application is usually compatible with Apple devices and can be downloaded from the App Store. Your child can record a lecture audio as they take notes simultaneously. Then, they are easily able to pinpoint a time in the lecture and edit or add notes from any point in the recording. Since this is an Apple-compatible application, your child can type their notes or use an Apple Pencil to handwrite notes or create diagrams.
