When you ask your child, “What did you learn at school today?” How often do they answer with “I don’t remember?” Do they struggle with recall?
Many children have difficulty memorizing facts, spelling, or vocabulary. Each child has a unique learning style, and it is important to discover how your child learns best. At Enrichment Therapy and Learning Center (ETLC), we utilize a wide array of learning strategies to find an individualized approach that promotes your child’s learning.
Here are a few memorization strategies that may work for your child:
Write It Down
Have your child practice their spelling or facts at home by writing it down. You can use various mediums such as crayons, chalk, or sand to make it memorable and fun.
Visualize and Verbalize
To visualize means to create a mental image, or to imagine. As a learning strategy, visualizing helps improve a child’s imagery, ability to retain information, follow complex directions, communicate thoughts in an organized manner, express language through writing, and increase brain processing speed. Check out our blog with fun ways to help your child strengthen their visualizing skills.
Say It Out Loud
Have your child read the word to you and then describe what it means. You could make a game out of it and practice with your child. Each person could take a turn drawing the flashcard out of a hat and describing what the word means. You could also hide the flashcards and go on a scavenger hunt.
Make an Association
Helping your child connect a word to something that is relevant in their lives is key. If your child can remember the association for a word, that will likely help them to recall the definition. You can reminisce about a fond memory using the word or relating it to a fact. You can also play an association game by making up an acronym or song using the word or fact.
Use It or Lose It
Repeat, repeat, repeat! Repetition and multiple exposures are shown to have the greatest impact. Reviewing previously practiced material and using different strategies listed above will increase your child’s success with memory recall!
