Now that your child has started school, how can you create a positive reading environment at home? Decodable readers are part of the answer!
What Are Decodable Readers?
Decodable books are texts that contain predictable, rule-based words that young readers can feel successful with. They have very few, if any, “rule-breaker” words, which helps young readers establish sentence-level reading fluency without feeling frustrated.
How Do Decodable Readers Work?
Decodable readers come in various levels and often correlate to reading instruction in the classroom. The earliest decodable readers will often have CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words that can be decoded using a short vowel sound. As students continue to acquire phonics knowledge, later levels will build off of previously mastered skills. Keep an eye out for any decodable texts that your child’s parents send home. These are great to practice and support automaticity in early readers.
How Can I Support My Child’s Reading?
In addition to providing age-appropriate reading opportunities through decodable texts, it is still important to read to your child, modeling inflection and rate. There should be a balance between the amount the child is reading vs the amount an adult is reading.
Decodable books can be found at your local library. Here is a list of titles that you could try with your early reader! Ask your local librarian if they have any additional recommendations.
