Throughout the past month, we have had 10 little class pets in LEAP. We’re studying butterflies and have been observing our Painted Lady caterpillars daily. To learn more about what the caterpillars were like during the first stages in their life, click here for my last blog post.
After all, caterpillars changed into their chrysalides, we moved them into the butterfly net. The next several days were rather uneventful and we didn’t notice much change with each chrysalis. After about 8 days we noticed a couple of the chrysalides become more transparent. This is a sign that the butterfly is almost ready to emerge into the butterfly habitat. Just the next day, we watched 2 of the butterflies come out of their chrysalides. This happened surprisingly fast! Check out the video below to see it happen! After all 9 butterflies emerged from their chrysalis, we let them fly around in the butterfly net for 4 days. Then, we took the butterfly net outside to release them. Each student shared their favorite memory of our butterfly unit. Many students enjoyed watching them create their chrysalides and watching the caterpillars crawl around. This was such a fun unit, especially as our last unit of the school year. I’m excited to create more lessons and fun science units for our 2017-2018 school year program.
